Proportion occupied by Israel

[edit]

The article says 2/3 occupied by Israel. The accompanying map, with its thin line just east of the occupied area, seems to show a tiny strip remaining under Syrian control and around 90% occupied. Either the map is misleading, or it is wrong, or (I suppose less likely) the 2/3 is wrong. I hope someone can fix the map. Zaslav (talk) 04:38, 7 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I was just going to post about this since we see this, "Following the 2024 Syrian opposition offensives Israel occupied the remaining one third of the area." The map needs updating to reflect the full locations with Israelis present. Iljhgtn (talk) 19:31, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Lede too long

[edit]

Lede is a summary of the body and should be ideally four well-composed paragraphs. The recent additions, especially to the last lede paragraph, has turned it into a bloated live blog instead of an encyclopaedic entry. Makeandtoss (talk) 16:26, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. I've edited the last paragraph already. Can we summarise some of the history? Lewisguile (talk) 15:10, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken a stab at the history too. See what you think? Lewisguile (talk) 15:23, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Better now, the second lede paragraph still needs trimming, specifically avoiding the hyperfocus on ancient civilizations. Makeandtoss (talk) 08:46, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. Any better now? We could remove the WP:SEAOFBLUE too, if you'd prefer. Lewisguile (talk) 10:03, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Much better, thanks. Very pleasantly readable now. Makeandtoss (talk) 10:10, 28 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request

[edit]

I think it would be more accurate to say “eastern third” instead of “eastern half” in the following sentence:

From 2012 to 2018, the eastern half of the Golan Heights became a scene of repeated battles…

Opening sentence

[edit]

I suggest slightly changing the opening sentence from "The Golan Heights, or simply the Golan, is a basaltic plateau at the southwest corner of Syria" to "The Golan Heights, or simply the Golan, is a basaltic plateau in the Levant contested between Syria and Israel" to reflect the current de facto situation along with the recognition of the Israeli sovereignty by the United States. CapLiber (talk) 18:03, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The view that the Golan belongs to Israel is a fringe view rejected by the international community. Your suggestion would give this fringe view undue weight in the lead sentence. JasonMacker (talk) 19:28, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
As a compromise, a part about the region being contested between Syria and Israel could be reomved, just leaving that it's a basatic plateau in the Levant, since the political situation is already explained in the later part of the intro. CapLiber (talk) 09:35, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For comparison, other occupied territories - Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea. They emphasize the majority view rather than amplify the minority view either directly or via absence of information. Sean.hoyland (talk) 13:24, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The article on Crimea actually doesn't signify that it belongs to Ukraine in the opening sentence, and it lists both Russian and Ukrainian claim to the territory in the infobox. The other parts of eastern Ukraine are subject to an ongoing full-scale war, which is not the case (even after the fall of Assad) of the Golan Heights. Edit request

[edit]

I'd like to request that the removal of the sentence which claims that there are "tourist trips to the areas occupied after the 2024 invasion" on the basis that it is counter-factual. Despite the headline of the cited article from the Guardian, careful reading of the article itself reveals that the new tours do not venture beyond the parts of the Golan heights that have been annexed by Israel in 1980. Indeed, the advertisement of the tour in question lists the destinations, and they all fall within the border of the buffer zone https://tickchak.co.il/79970 UncleMatt (talk) 14:14, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
